When I set out to create a brand for my design work I wanted to create a name and identity that would be a reflection of me and who I am, not a descriptor of my work. Something that would tell clients and patrons something fundamental about my personal philosophy and give them a window into how I approach life, and consequently, work.
As someone enthralled with exploring the beauty and magnificence of the earthbound natural world, I have always been moved by the words of John Muir. Also, the idea that one day our distant descendants will travel to the stars and visit, and be awed by, the forests, mountains, lakes, and living things that live on other worlds, in other solar systems, and other galaxies, inspires and moves me. One quote of Muir's joins these two passions for the exploration of nature and space in a way that seems, to me, undeniably profound and motivating.

The wilderness and the universe. The two are really the same thing. Each a part of, and an extension of, the other. So I joined them into Wilderverse. A word that connects and encompasses both. The "W" and the "V" are visually similar and like wilderness and universe, one is just an extension of the other. An acronym based logo, or Lettermark logo, seemed appropriate and simple. Since Wilderverse is not an actual term, however, I needed some visual ques to show the derivation of the two parent terms: Wilderness and Universe. Wilderness to me is a word that is synonymous with the word forest, and when I think of Universe I think of distant planets and stars. I also tried designs that combined rustic with futuristic elements, but they seemed too human centered and less organic. After many iterations and doodles, just a few of which are shown here, I settled on the design below.
